Proposed guidelines

  1. Students eligible for storing their Web pages on postgrad.eee.bham.ac.uk would be all MPhil and PhD research students, initially only those who are based within this School.

  2. Pages on the new server are only for students to outline and document their research to date.
    Content might include:

    • name and email address, project title, supervisor etc.
    • abstracts
    • discussion / explanation of research topics
    • summaries of progress reports written to date
    • Whole progress reports (if agreeable to supervisor / head of PG school)
    • Abstracts of papers already written / submitted
    • Whole papers (where copyright allows this)
    • Statement of project sponsors / partners, where applicable
    • Actual or potential applications of their research, if applicable
    • Links to web pages / sites related to the student's work, school / research group / supervisors' web pages.

Any content on this site that is outside the scope of these areas would be deemed to be unacceptable, and the pages would be rendered offline until the problem was rectified. All existing Conditions of Use would continue to apply.

  3. Additionally, the following may also be permitted:

    • A link to the student's own personal web page (may be stored at web.bham.ac.uk, or elsewhere). It must clearly be stated that clicking on the link will cause the user to leave the School web server.
    • An online curriculum vitae (CV) may be stored on the postgrad web server if the student so wishes.

  4. Access: Each student would have full write access to their own space on the new web server once their initial pages have been determined to be acceptable.

Students would then be responsible for updating their page at regular intervals, and this would be reviewed at the next submission of a report or at more regular intervals if appropriate.

  5. Style: Students must adhere to the prevailing School/University style, and adhere to any guidance provided on web security (or other issues) that may be provided from time to time. A template is provided for this purpose.

Please note that, while changing foreground and background colours may be a simple way to change your page's appearance, they can make it more difficult for some people to read. In general, a conservative approach will tend to irritate fewer visitors to your page and to increase its lifespan. You only have to look at a few old pages to realise this!
